SMART METERING SET TO SAVE £300 MILLION FOR UK SMEs
bglobal, the leading provider of smart metering solutions to the energy market, has today welcomed the publication of research by the Carbon Trust which highlights the financial advantages of advance energy metering to SMEs.
The report, compiled with the assistance of bglobal, has found that the use of advanced or 'smart' metering by SMEs, has a net financial benefit for the UK economy and could save 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year - equivalent to the entire carbon footprint of Bristol.
Significantly, cutting carbon also resulted in an average financial saving of over £1,000 a year on energy bills with the largest financial benefits enjoyed by multi-site businesses such as retail and wholesale chains, and for high energy users such as small manufacturing operations. The report concluded that widespread adoption of smart meters would result in an annual cost saving of £300 million for small businesses.
Commenting on the report, Tony Stiff, commercial director of bglobal, said the report demonstrates UK SMEs can save money as well as large businesses and contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions by British industry.
Tony added: "In the past, the lack of financial incentives for small businesses to implement smart meters has been a stumbling block. However, since the study began, bglobal has developed more cost effective solutions which now make it economically viable.
"Traditionally, UK businesses have received guesstimate bills for their energy consumption which suffer from inaccuracies and can lead to wasted resources. The beauty of smart meters is the real time data they provide which allows managers to budget more accurately, monitor and plan their energy consumption in more detail, and highlight any areas of waste that can be addressed.
"bglobal offers a unique end-to-end fully accredited smart metering solution with full accreditation, by manufacturing, installing, reading and operating smart meters. Also, our energy management software automates the delivery of information to customers via their email account or the web."
The research was carried out by the Carbon Trust in order to demonstrate the benefits of smart metering to SMEs. bglobal now joins the Carbon Trust in calling for widespread adoption of smart meters by SMEs and new policy measures to accelerate the roll out of the technology.
